Adoption Agencies and Information for Columbia
The government office responsible for adoptions in Colombia is the Colombian
Family Welfare Institute (ICBF). Prospective adoptive parents are advised
to fully research adoption agencies or facilitators they plan to use for adoption
services and ensure that it is an agency accredited by Bienestar Familiar (ICBF).
Colombian law allows for adoptions by a married man and woman and common law spouses
of more than three years. Single men and women are eligible to adopt children
over the age of seven years only and on a case-by-case basis. In practice, newborns
are assigned to younger couples, and older children are assigned to older couples.
