adoption taxpayer id number

What is the Adoption Taxpayer ID Number?

It is often the case that an adopting family will need to file federal and state Income Tax forms before they have a Social Security Number for the child they are adopting. The Taxpayer ID number will allow you to file for a child when you do not yet have a Social Security Number.

When you adopt a child you often will not have a birth certificate for many months after the adoption, and this means a delay in obtaining a Social Security Number for your adopted child. In order to apply for a child deduction on your U.S. income tax return you will need the social security number or have an Adoption Taxpayer ID Number. This site (previous link) will help you with information about a temporary child adoption identification number.
