Can You Select the Family?
With the right agency, the simple answer is yes you can choose the family your child is placed with. But there is a little more to it than that.
Many birth parents are surprised to find they don’t want to be deeply involved in choosing the adoptive family. Some prefer not to look through profiles or meet families at all. Instead, they may just have a few things that matter to them—like wanting a family with a certain faith, a stable marriage, a good income, or a safe place to live. Others may want a family that values education and can afford to send a child to college.
Some birth parents simply want to know their child will be loved, cared for, and raised in a healthy, stable home. Others want a more personal connection. They may choose to meet the adoptive family, talk on the phone, or exchange letters and pictures. Some even go to doctor visits together or spend time together at the hospital when the baby is born.
Your choices mostly come down to what you want and what your state allows. That said, some adoption agencies or attorneys may try to limit your options. For example, they may only offer open or closed adoptions, or they may require you to meet—or not meet—the adoptive family.
That’s why it’s important to select an agency that gives you as many options as possible within the law. Aside from legal limits, the decisions are yours. You can be as involved—or as private—as you feel comfortable.
Additional Information and Help
After over 45+ years of working with birth mothers and fathers, we’ve learned that no two people want the exact same experience. Everyone has their own comfort level, hopes, and priorities.
At Adoption Services, we take the time to listen to what matters most to you. We help you think through the kind of family you want for your child and how involved you’d like to be. Then we match you with a family from our carefully screened list of adoptive parents.
You also decide what kind of contact you want. You can meet the family or not, receive updates and photos or not, and choose an open or closed adoption. You can even decide if you’d like contact in the future.
In the end, it’s about what feels right to you.
