More about Your Choices

Based on over 40+ years of helping birth parents, I strongly suggest to work only with a fully licensed not-for-profit adoption agency and not some other authority. If you pick the right agency, you can decide whether to be involved in each and every step, or you can let the adoption agency take care of everything. With the right agency you can make only those decisions that you are comfortable with and let the agency take care of the rest.

The right agency will make sure that your child is placed in a safe and loving home with the kind of parents you want. You will be able to pick the adopting family yourself and/or give your agency the things about the family that are important to you, such as their age, religion, income level, whether they have children, where they live, etc., and let them select the family.

With the help of the agency, you can decide how much contact you will have with the adopting family and with your child. You can to meet the family if you want, get updates and pictures or not, and can even see the family as your child grows.

You can make as many or as few of the choices as you want. Just make sure you carefully select an adoption agency that does not put limits on you and the adoption, but truly has your interest at heart and lets you decide how you want the adoption to take place.

Open or Closed Adoption?

There is no level of an open or closed adoption that is best in every case. With the right agecny,  Closed and open adoptions both can be done in a healthy way. It is important you understand each type of adoption so you can proceed the way that is best for you and your child.

Adoption Agency or Private Adoption?

Remember that an agency and private adoption are very different. They both result in your rights being ended and with the child being adopted, but the way they get to this result is very different.

Adoption Agencies or Adoption Facilitators?

All to often adoption facilitators are not licensed. Facilitators can risky, the U.S. government advises only dealing with licensed adoption agencies and many states have outlawed facilitators.

Can I Choose the Adopting Family?

You can select the adopting family or you can have the adoption agency select them for you. You can decide on their age, religion, lifestyle, number of kids already in the family, where they live, or any other things that are important to you. The choices can all be yours if you want.
