Start by thinking about what matters most to you. That may include the family’s age, religion, marital status, openness in the adoption, or other values that feel important to you. Do not rely on pictures and a short family description alone. A careful home study gives you a much better idea of whether a family is ready to care for a child.

The official name of the screening of the adopting family is called the Home Study. A really good Home Study takes many hours to complete. It includes an in-depth psychological and social assessment of each adopting person as outlined above.A good home study should look at many things. It may include interviews, background checks, medical history, personal references, income records, home safety, and the family’s views on parenting and discipline.

Once a family has been carefully screened, you can learn more about them and decide whether they feel right for your child. You can also ask the agency to help match you with a family based on the things you want most.

A good adoption agency should keep checking in after placement too. They should stay in touch and make sure the child is doing well as the child grows.

How is the family Screened and Evaluated?

The family screening can be done by you, the adoptive family’s attorney, a referral service, someone hired by the family, or a licensed child adoption agency. But not every option is equally objective, since some people are naturally focused on helping the family get approved.

A licensed child adoption agency usually provides the most careful and unbiased review, because its main concern is the child’s well-being. Once the family has been pre-approved, you can learn more about them and decide whether you feel comfortable with the match. That way, you know the family has already gone through a thorough and fair and honest screening process.

Once the families have been pre-screened, that is the time to help choose the family for your child. You may meet the family and choose them yourself, let the adoption agency handle the selection, or give the agency the qualities that matter most to you, such as religion, marital status, or age, and let them do the rest.

A good adoption agency should also be open about its history. It should be willing to tell you whether any child placed by the agency has ever been abandoned, neglected, or abused, and you can also confirm that information with the agency’s licensing authority.
