Do you, or someone you know, have an unplanned pregnancy, unexpected pregnancy, or unwanted pregnancy? If so, you are far from alone.
While it is hard to believe, about half, yes half (50%), of all pregnancies in the U.S. are an unplanned, unwanted, or unexpected pregnancy. If you are in this 50%, you have several choices. You and/or the father can choose to raise the baby, place with a family member, develop an adoption plan, or end the pregnancy through abortion.
Roe v. Wade
The choice of abortion has a long history in the US. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the famous case Roe v. Wade, said that pregnant women in the U.S. have rights regarding the pregnancy. The woman can choose to carry her pregnancy to term and give birth or end the pregnancy through abortion.
This right that you and other pregnant women have is again being reviewed by State Courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result, this right is being weakened or being taken away.
If this right for you to decide as currently allowed by Roe v. Wade is further weakened or overturned, the result would that each state would then determine the legality of abortion. This would likely result in very strong limitations regarding how available and legal abortion becomes.
Recently, several states (including Texas, Arizona, South Dakota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio, and many others) have approved laws seeking to prohibit and/or restrict abortions. Currently over 40 states prohibit or in some way limit abortions.
You Have Options
Given that abortions are under an ever-growing attack, it is important for a woman to understand the alternatives to abortion including raising the child, placing with family, and adoption.
If you have an unplanned pregnancy, unexpected pregnancy, or unwanted pregnancy, remember that you are not alone. And it is common to have feelings and thoughts of self-doubt and panic about what is going to happen. Please remember that you can get help and support.
To offer help and support is one of the main reasons that I created Adoption Services, a unique, licensed, and not-for-profit adoption agency over 37 years ago. My goal is to continue to help pregnant women and birth mothers who find themselves in this 50% group of pregnant women with an unwanted, unplanned, or unexpected pregnancy.
Please, ask yourself what you need, what is best for you and your baby, and where you can get the help and support you need and deserve.
