Regarding recent changes in abortion law, a pregnant woman in Delaware with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had the options available to her reduced.
Roe v. Wade, a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court, ruled that if a pregnant woman wanted an abortion, her rights were protected by our Constitution. This decision was recently changed and now the abortion laws in Delaware and many other states have changed.
The law now in effect in Delaware is that abortion is legal only up to approximately 24-26 weeks or after that if necessary to preserve the life or health (including mental health) of the pregnant woman. However, parental consent or notice is required for a minor to have an abortion.
What does that mean for me in Delaware?
This means that for you, as a resident of Delaware, abortion may no longer be an option.
As a pregnant woman in Delaware, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near Delaware where an abortion may be possible;
(2) giving birth to the child and then parent your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the biological father raise the child;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father, raise the baby;
(4) allow the Delaware foster care system to take custody of the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through a licensed adoption agency.
If you are thinking of placing your baby for adoption, our licensed not-for-profit agency, Adoption Services (www.adoptionservices.org), can, and will, help you.
