What does the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade mean for me in Hawaii?

Due to recent changes in abortion law, a pregnant woman in Hawaii has had the options available to her changed.

Roe v. Wade was a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court, ruling that if a woman wanted an abortion, her rights were protected by our Constitution.  This decision was recently overturned.  The result was that abortion laws in Hawaii, and many other states, changed.

If you are pregnant in Hawaii with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, the law now in effect is that abortion is legal only up to approximately 24-26 weeks.  Additionally, state Medicaid coverage of abortion care is banned except in very limited circumstances and parental consent, or notice, is required for a minor's abortion.

What does that mean for me in Hawaii?

This means that as a resident of Hawaii, abortion may no longer be an option for you.

As a pregnant woman in Hawaii, your options now may include:

(1) making a trip to some other state where an abortion may be possible;
(2) giving birth to the child and then parent your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the father raise the child;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father, raise the baby;
(4) allow the Hawaii foster care system to take custody of the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through a licensed adoption agency.
