What does the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade mean for me in Iowa?

All pregnant women in Iowa are affected by the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court changing Roe v, Wade.  The Court has now determined that there is no longer a constitutional right to abortion.

Iowa abortion law currently makes it illegal to perform an abortion at 22 weeks and later, and if you are eligible for an abortion, you will need to make two trips—one for in-person counseling and another at least 24 hours later for the abortion.  Parental consent or notice is required for a minor's abortion.

Roe v. Wade was a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that provided a constitutionally protected right to abortion regardless of the laws of Iowa. The U.S. Supreme Court has now reversed Roe v. Wade, and the constitutional right to abortion no longer exists.

This decision means that abortion rights changed in many states including Iowa. For all practical purposes, abortion will not be available, or be very limited, in Iowa and many other states.

What can I do?

What can you, as an Iowa pregnant woman with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy do since abortion in your state may no longer be an option?

Your options may include including:

(1) traveling to a state where an abortion may be possible;
(2) carrying the pregnancy and raising the child either yourself or with the birthfather, or letting the father raise the child;
(3) having a family member or friend raise the child;
(4) placing the child in the Iowa foster care system; or
(5) consider placing the baby for adoption.

Since 1985 our not-for-profit agency, Adoption Services (www.adoptionservices.org), has completed almost 900 successful placements of babies with loving families.  Our Agency, or some other adoption agency, can help you find just the right family to adopt your baby.
