What does the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade mean for me in Maine?

Changes have recently taken place in Maine abortion law and in many other states.  As a result, a pregnant woman in Maine has had abortion options available to her limited.

Roe v. Wade, a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court, ruled that a woman’s right to abortion was protected by the U.S.  Constitution.  This decision was recently overturned and changed, resulting in the abortion laws in Maine being changed.

If you are pregnant with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, the law now in effect in Maine is that abortion is illegal after approximately 24-26 weeks of pregnancy.  After this 24-26 week period, an abortion may be performed but only to protect the life or health of the pregnant woman.

What does that mean for me in Maine?

As a pregnant woman in Maine, your options now may include:

(1) making a trip to a state near Maine where an abortion may be legal;
(2) giving birth to the baby and then parenting your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the birth father raise the child;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, raise the child;
(4) allow the Maine foster care system to take custody of the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family.
