Recently, the abortion laws in Minnesota changed and, due to the changes, a pregnant woman in Minnesota has now had her abortion options limited.
A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding Roe v. Wade, ruled that a woman’s right to abortion is no longer protected by the U.S. Constitution. As a result of this decision, the abortion laws in Minnesota, as well as many other states, changed.
If you have an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy and live in Minnesota, the abortion law now in effect is that abortion is not allowed after 24-26 weeks (called the period of fetal viability).
What does that mean for me in Minnesota?
As a pregnant woman in Minnesota, your options have been restricted and now include:
(1) making a trip to some nearby state where an abortion may be possible;
(2) giving birth to the baby and then parent your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the birth father raise the child;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, raise the baby;
(4) allow the Minnesota foster care system to take the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through a not-for-profit agency.
If you are thinking of placing your baby for adoption, know that since 1985, when we first started helping pregnant women, our not-for-profit agency (www.adoptionservices.org) has completed almost 900 successful placements of babies with loving adopting families.
