Nevada, and many states across the U.S., changed their abortion laws because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision. With the new laws, a pregnant woman in Nevada with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had her options limited.
Roe v. Wade, a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, stated that abortion was a protected right of a pregnant woman, regardless of the laws of Nevada. This decision was recently changed, and the result was that Nevada abortion laws were also changed.
The law now in effect is that abortion in Nevada is legal within 24 weeks since fertilization. Under the Nevada Revised Statutes chapter 442, section 250, after 24 weeks it may be legal if the pregnancy could be fatal for the pregnant woman.
What does this mean for you if you are a resident of Nevada?
It means that abortion may no longer be an option for you.
As a pregnant woman in Nevada, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near Nevada where an abortion may be possible;
(2) giving birth to the baby and then parenting your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the birth father raise the child himself;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father, raise the child;
(4) allow the Nevada foster care system to take custody of the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through the help of a non-profit adoption agency.
