New Hampshire, and many other states across the U.S., have changed their abortion laws because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision. With the new laws, a woman who is a resident of New Hampshire with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had her choices limited.
Roe v. Wade was a 1973, U.S. Supreme Court, ruling that abortion was a protected right of every woman, regardless of the laws of New Hampshire, or any other state. When this decision was recently reviewed, the Court overturned the previous ruling and now the abortion laws in New Hampshire and many other states have been changed.
What does that mean for me in New Hampshire?
The law now in effect in New Hampshire is that:
1) abortion is illegal after 24 weeks of pregnancy;
2) Medicaid abortion coverage is no longer allowed except in very limited circumstances; and
3) parental consent or notice may be required.
The result is that, as a pregnant woman living in New Hampshire, abortion may no longer be an option for you.
As a pregnant woman in New Hampshire, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near New Hampshire where an abortion may be possible;
(2) giving birth to the child and then raising your baby, parent the baby with the baby’s father, or let the birth father raise the child himself;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, raise the child;
(4) allow the New Hampshire foster care system to take custody the your baby; or
(5) look into placing your baby for adoption with just the right loving family through a not-for-profit adoption agency.
