New York, and many states across the U.S., have changed their abortion laws because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision.
It was in 1973 that the U.S. Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade, stated that your rights to an abortion were protected regardless of the abortion laws of New York. When this this decision was recently reviewed, the Court overturned the previous ruling and now the abortion laws in New York and many other states have been changed.
Now, the New York abortion law is that abortion after 24-weeks after fertilization is not allowed unless the fetus is not viable or the pregnant woman’s life or health is at risk.
What does that mean for me in New York?
With the new laws, a woman who is a resident of New York, with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had her options reduced
As a pregnant woman in New York, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near New York where an abortion may be legal;
(2) birthing your baby and then parenting the baby, parent the baby with the baby’s biological father, or let the birth father raise the baby;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, take care of the child for you;
(4) allow the New York foster care system to take the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through a non-profit adoption agency.
