Rhode Island, and many other states, have changed their abortion laws because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision.
It was in 1973 that the U.S. Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade stated that your rights to an abortion were protected regardless of the abortion laws of Rhode Island. When this this decision was recently reviewed, the Court reversed the previous ruling and now the Rhode Island abortion laws have changed.
Abortion is now legal in Rhode Island until 24-26 weeks post-fertilization. This represents the stage of pregnancy when the fetus has developed enough that it is able to survive outside the uterus with medical help.
With the new laws, a woman who is a resident of Rhode Island with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had her options limited.
What does that mean for me in Rhode Island?
As a pregnant woman in Rhode Island, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near Rhode Island where an abortion may be possible;
(2) birthing your baby and then parenting the child, parent the baby with the baby’s biological father, or let the birth father raise the baby;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, take care of the child for you;
(4) allow the Rhode Island foster care system to take custody of the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving family through the help of a not-for-profit adoption agency.
