Washington, and many other states, have recently changed their abortion laws. This is because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision related to a 1973 ruling (Roe v. Wade) regarding abortion rights. In 1973 the Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade, stated that your rights to an abortion were protected by the U.S. Constitution regardless of the abortion laws of Washington.
When this Court decision was recently reviewed, the Court changed its ruling and now the Washington abortion laws have changed.
As of now, abortion is legal in Washington until 24-26 weeks of pregnancy. This represents the stage of pregnancy when the fetus has developed enough that it is able to survive outside the uterus with medical help.
With the new laws, a pregnant woman in Washington, with an unexpected, unwanted, or untimely pregnancy, has had her abortion option limited.
What does that mean for me in Washington?
As a pregnant woman in Washington, your options now may include:
(1) making a trip to some state near Washington where an abortion may be possible;
(2) birthing your baby and then parenting the child, parent the baby with the baby’s biological father, or let the birth father raise the child;
(3) let a family member, or a friend of yours or the birth father’s, take care of the child for you;
(4) allow the Washington foster care system to take the baby; or
(5) look into placing the baby for adoption with just the right loving adopting family though a not-for-profit adoption agency.
If you are thinking of placing your baby for adoption, Adoption Services (www.adoptionservices.org), can, and will, help you.
